How tipping works on a hike or adventure tour.

Guided hikes, treks and climbs are paid in advance, and guests usually tip at the end, often per day on longer trips. On a trek in Nepal, $5–10 a day for a guide is common; specialist guides in the US often get $20–50 a day.

Nobody carries much cash up a mountain. Guests scan one code at the trailhead, save the photos you took on the way, and say thanks from their phone.
